Song Story: Just Passing Through
“For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
+2 Corinthians 5:1
Today, July 29th is my late grandma’s birthday. My sister reminded me that she would’ve been 87 years old today. There are so many things I could say about my Grandma Peggy but many of them are captured in a song I wrote in her memory just after she left us to meet with Jesus. She was the rock of our family. She was the model of dedication and love for family. She was a woman of fierce faith to those she loved and nothing, not even staring death in the face, could hinder that. Memories flood my mind as I recall her beautiful life. I entitled my song Just Passing Through as a reminder that this life is a bridge into the next. When we pass away we walk into eternity. For some, it’s heavenly bliss and for others, sadness and separation from God. For my grandma, she entered into heavenly bliss. The “earthly home,” the tent of her body faded away as her soul soared into the throne room of heaven. Peggy loved God and family.
A Home in Heaven
As my family grieved together in the hospital room the night of her passing, I was reminded of a wonderful promise in God’s Word from 2 Corinthians 5:1. The Apostle Paul was reminding himself of the hope that came after physical death. Eternal life awaited him as he faced persecution from without. He had hope from within. God’s Holy Spirit lived within him and brought to his memory the truth that even though his body would be destroyed, he had a home in heaven. My Grandma Peggy is now residing in her heavenly home. I love and miss her. But I know one day I will see her again, a very real hope and joy! Her kind and noble heart was and is an example for my family to live by. She never gave up on me even when I gave up on myself. Her will for me to succeed was a ray of light for me in my darkest moments. When I had given up hope to live, she stubbornly stood by with arms open wide to show me unconditional love. Thank you Grandma for your beautiful life. I pray that as I live for Jesus I remember your example and strive to love people as fully and endlessly as you did.
Love, Steven
Just Passing Through + 2 Corinthians 5:1-10
Verse 1
It was a dark and dreary night
When you stepped into the light
As we watched your life slip by
And waited for an answer
Chorus
Today, I see in my mind, you’re still watching me
Today, I feel in my heart, you’re walking by
Just passing through
Verse 2
Memories of black and white
Captured the wrong and the right
Times of love and times of fun
Holding your hand and holding your love
Verse 3
Reminded by the life you lived
It’s never enough just to give
All you have away but
To live a life of grace
Ending
I love you, I miss you
I thank you for, your beautiful life
