Song Story: Revive Me Again!

You who have made me see many troubles and calamities
    will revive me again;
from the depths of the earth
you will bring me up again.
You will increase my greatness
    and comfort me again.

+Psalm 71:20-21

This promise from God’s Word came at the perfect time.  I was enduring a painful loss, a broken relationship and was hounded by bitterness, anger and confusion. “God, why have you allowed this to happen? I thought this was your will for me.”  I prayed these words in a desperate state.  My heart was broken.  My mind was confused.  My life was a mess.  During my time at Southern Seminary, I thought I had it all figured out.  My future, my relationships and everything was moving in a great direction.  Then everything changed.  My plans were ruined and something I held dear was taken from me.  God revealed to me that this was an idol in my heart.  It hurt so bad because I held it too close.  I ended up worshiping the gift instead of the Giver of the gift.  As James writes, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (1:17).  I was guilty of idolatry.  God broke my idol and reminded me, through painful loss, that He is the only thing that can truly satisfy the longings of my heart.

Faith is Like a Muscle

In the midst of great pain, fierce bitterness and crippling doubts my Lord reached out His hand and put my soul at rest.  It took several months to see the light again, but the grace of Jesus revived me again-bringing new life out of the darkness.  It has been said that faith is like a muscle.  It must be stretched in order to grow stronger.  God uses trials in our lives to grow our faith and to make it stronger.  What the enemy uses for our harm, God uses for our good.  And this good is to be made more like Jesus, the perfect Son of God (Rom. 8:28).  Take heart believer, although He has sent troubles your way, he will revive you again with His sweet, enduring grace.  Amen.

Revive Me Again (Psalm 71:20-21)

Verse 1

Until the time comes, when hurt turns to joy

I’ll wrestle with the pain You sent my way

And through the heartache

I cry out Your name

My prayer will reach Your throne

Verse 2

I have a yearning, deep inside my heart

Beyond the battle waged within my soul

I call out for my Rock and Refuge now

Your Spirit gives me life

Chorus

Redeemed, set free

My soul is in Your hands

My hope, my trust

Be near, my salvation

My heart is dead Lord,

Revive me again

Revive me again

Bridge

Be near, my hope, my God

My Lord and salvation

Great article on detours! Dr. Tony Evans has a book with that title all about the detours we take in life and how God uses them for His glory. I have not read the book but it is on my radar to read.
