Song Story: My Grace Is All You Need

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

+2 Corinthians 12:9-10

God lovingly guided me to this passage during a trying season of my life.  A relationship I was sure was going to work out didn’t work out. I was crushed. My heart was a bitter, downcast mess. I needed hope and healing. It has taken nearly 2-3 years to recover from this trial. I went my separate way. She went hers. The Lord decided to keep testing me as I faced more reminders of the broken relationship. A broken heart takes time to heal. God knows our pain. He makes us wait on Him to heal our wounds. This was my case. Each day was a struggle to move forward as I fought off bitter, often surprising thoughts and emotions. “Am I really thinking and feeling this way?” “How can God help me when I am feeling like this?” These thoughts flooded my mind as I felt chained down by anger and guilt. A prisoner of my own heart. A dim light flickered in my self-constructed cell. “Will I ever be free from this?” Pain has a way of sticking with you. So does God’s grace.

God’s Satisfying Grace

During this painful time, I had to keep going to classes at Southern Seminary and finish well. By God’s grace, I made it through. It wasn’t easy, but He gave me just enough strength to finish strong. One source of strength was the passage mentioned above. The Apostle Paul faced more trials than one can imagine. In his mission to spread the Gospel to the world, he was beaten, stoned, left for dead, imprisoned and shipwrecked all for his fierce faith in Christ and stubborn pursuit to tell a sinful world about his Savior. There was a particular “thorn” Paul faced which Satan used to test Him and God allowed to humble him. After pleading for the thorn to be taken away, God allowed it in order to show Paul something amazing-His grace is sufficient. Christ himself spoke to Paul and said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Wow! Hope flooded into my heart as I made this truth my own. In my distress, my broken heart could rest in God’s grace.  Because of what Christ has done for me on the cross and in his resurrection, I have eternal and unbreakable hope. Just as Paul reflected, in my times of great weakness, God’s power is made most great! Therefore, my hope is secure. This trial would not last and I wrote this song to remind myself that God’s grace is truly enough to meet my greatest need. I pray that hope floods over you as you read and listen to this song.

My Grace Is All You Need

Lord I pray, I need your grace,

This thorn in my side won’t go away.

So many times I called our Your name,

My desperate heart was pierced with pain.

Verse 2

You saw my pride rise up unseen,

My selfish heart, I could not see.

You sent this pain to show I’m weak,

These words my Savior spoke to me, Jesus said,

Chorus

“My grace is all you need.

I am your strength when you are weak.

I’ll never leave you, I’m right beside you.

I bought you with my precious blood.

My grace is all you need. It’s all you need.”

Bridge

You are here with me, in the fire.

Your power rests upon my heart.

My hope is You, Christ in me, my precious King.

Ending

My grace is all your heart needs
