With the push of papers and barricade of books, it’s easy to lose your soul in seminary. By this I mean it’s easy to allow yourself to be consumed by gaining more knowledge and achieving a great grade point average while sacrificing your walk with Jesus. We must push the books aside and open up Scripture, pray through a passage and spend intentional time, and spontaneous time, in worship to God! If we don’t interrupt our studies with worship our faith will shrivel up and die like a spring flower in the winter cold. At times, with the guise of intellectual prowess and theological precision, we march about with little care for others and condemn those who don’t share our particular views. Jesus becomes a point of debate among believers rather than a beacon of hope for sinners. When our souls are lost in seminary we care more about the minute details of theological views than the billions of lives around the globe on the fast track to a hell-bound fate. The world needs us! Charles Spurgeon and John Calvin can wait awhile. My prayer today, for myself and my fellow seminarians, is that we would put Christ back into the center of our lives and studies. That we will stop making our studies an idol, parading itself as true piety, repent of our sin and offer our hearts anew to Christ, the supreme object of our faith. May we re-embrace the Gospel and go with the Great Commission to spread the faith we study about and hold so dear. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
